Overview
As part of SJK Architects, I worked as an architect during the construction execution phase of a hospitality design project based in Bodhgaya, Bihar in India.
Bodhgaya is where the Buddha is deemed to have received enlightenment. It is perhaps one of the holiest and oldest sites of pilgrimage for the Buddhist world.
This context as well as the skills and materials relevant to the site’s culture and location informed the design for this hotel, which makes extensive use of brick and terracotta tiles – cottage industries that has remained active in the area over the last 2000 years.

Contextual Design
The vocabulary of the building, using the craftsmanship of brick vaults, pillars and architraves also attempts to convey the emotions that most embody the Buddhist practice – wisdom, courage, compassion, forbearance and perseverance.
Spread over 4.5 acres, the courtyards and water bodies as well as the sloping roofscapes create the conditions for an ecologically sustainable and highly contextual resort for Buddhist pilgrims.

My Role
Preparing design details, plans, sections and elevations issued to construction site team for execution.
Coordinating with client representatives on site progress, design changes as per requirements and issued revisions to construction drawings as well as checking and coordinating shop drawing prepared by respective contractors.
I worked on sampling for materials to be used for construction, including stained concrete, brick masonry and clay tiles though on-site and off-site mock-ups and material board building.
I would also go for regular (monthly or bi-monthly as needed) site visits to ensure proper execution, conduct quality checks and adherence to design intent, client requirements & construction drawings.
I coordinated with technical consultants for various building services:
Structural Engineering
Electrical
HVAC
Plumbing
Landscape Designers
Lighting Designers
3D Visualisation
Signage Consultants
Project Management Team
On-site Contractors
