Overview
I volunteered as part of the team for a workshop “Unlock Hundarman” which was organized by Roots Ladakh and CEPT University in the Himalayan region of Kargil, Ladakh - a rural town located at the India-Pakistan border (Line of Control).
As part of the workshop organizing team, I helped mentor workshop participants to document and build a “museum of memories” in a bordering village settlement 10 miles from the main town of Kargil that had been abandoned due to war 40 years ago.
Articles such as personal memorabilia, utensils, diaries, items traded along the silk route trade, local games, farming equipment, jewellery, etc found in the ruins of the settlement were cleaned, documented, curated and displayed in the museum.
The ethnic artefacts in the restored settlement instilled the village’s pride in their local heritage, attracting tourists from diverse backgrounds, and providing them an additional source of income.
Credits
This project was made possible by Roots Ladakh in collaboration with 20 summer school workshop participants from CEPT University, Ahmedabad, besides the unparallelled hospitality, assistance and smiles of the local village community of Hundarman, Kargil.
